Dr. Gary Silverman to head Washington University School of Medicine pediatrics: 5 things to know

Gary Silverman, MD, PhD, has been named the Harriet B. Spoehrer Professor and head of the department of pediatrics at St. Louis-based Washington University School of Medicine.

Here are five things to know about the appointment.

1. The appointment takes effect in April.

2. With the appointment, Dr. Silverman, a neonatologist, will become pediatrician-in-chief at St. Louis Children's Hospital and executive director of the Children's Discovery Institute, a partnership of the school and hospital.

3. He currently is vice chairman for basic research in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's department of pediatrics and at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

4. He also is the Twenty-Five Club Professor of pediatrics, cell biology and physiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and division chief of newborn medicine at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. Both hospitals are part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

5. Dr. Silverman succeeds Alan Schwartz, PhD, MD.
