Mr. Akin joined Cone Health in 2009 as COO. In April 2012, he was named president of the system. He will add CEO to his title October 1, and Mr. Rice will transition to CEO emeritus.

The change in leadership will come a few months earlier, as Mr. Rice had planned to transition the CEO role to Mr. Akin in January 2015, when he officially retires. The October transition will coincide with the beginning of the system’s fiscal year, however.
