Cleveland Clinic names medical director for Lakewood facility: 6 things to know

Cleveland Clinic has appointed James Hekman, MD, as the medical director for its new Lakewood (Ohio) Family Health Center.

Here are six things to know about Dr. Hekman.

1. As medical director, he will focus on ambulatory and emergency department care at the $34 million, 62,000-square-foot Lakewood facility, which is expected to be completed by mid-2018. He will also work with the Lakewood community to encourage the wellness of residents, Cleveland Clinic officials said.

2. Dr. Hekman joined Cleveland Clinic in 2008, practicing internal medicine with a subspecialty in HIV at the Beachwood (Ohio) Family Health and Surgery Center.

3. Most recently, Dr. Hekman helped design and launch Cleveland Clinic's Center for LGBT Care in the Chagrin Falls (Ohio) Family Health Center.

4. He and his team are also providing care in Lakewood four days a week and plan to expand to full-time coverage once the new Lakewood Family Health Center opens in 2018.  

5. Dr. Hekman was appointed as a clinical assistant professor with the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine in 2014.

6.  He completed medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.
