CHS names executive VP for spin-off company: 5 things to know

Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems has named Martin D. Smith executive vice president of operations for its planned spin-off company, Quorum Health Corp.

Here are five things to know about Mr. Smith.

1. He joins healthcare veterans Thomas D. Miller, who was previously named CEO of the new company, and Michael J. Culotta, who was previously named CFO of the new company.

2. Mr. Smith is currently Division III president of operations for CHS. In that role, he is responsible for operations and management for 35 affiliated hospitals in Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. That includes 14 hospitals that will be part of Quorum Health Corp., when the spin-off is completed, officials said.

3. Previously, he was a vice president of group operations for CHS. He has also served as CEO of a hospital in Cleveland, Tenn., and as CEO of Pottstown (Pa.) Memorial Medical Center.

5. He earned a bachelor's degree from Cleveland, Tenn.-based Lee University and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
