Cedars-Sinai taps surgical oncologist for chair position

Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai Medical Center appointed Cristina Ferrone, MD, as chair of the Department of Surgery. She will assume the role in January.

Dr. Ferrone works as a professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School and director of the office of clinical careers for Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, according to an Aug. 30 news release from Cedars-Sinai. She specializes in patients with complex hepato-pancreatico-biliary disorders and has spearheaded novel minimally invasive surgical techniques and immunotherapeutic strategies for patients with liver, biliary system and pancreas cancers.

Dr. Ferrone succeeds Bruce Gewertz, MD, who is now vice dean of clinical system development and faculty affairs.

"I am excited to join Cedars-Sinai and to collaborate across specialties with my new colleagues," Dr. Ferrone said in the Aug. 30 press release. "Collaboration is the key to medical discoveries and innovation, improving outcomes for patients and enhancing public health."
