Michael Wagner, MD, president and CEO of Providence, R.I.-based Care New England, will step down from his role and transition to serve as chair of the system’s board of directors.
The system’s board has launched a national search for its next president and CEO, with a goal of appointing one in early 2027, according to a news release shared with Becker’s.
Dr. Wagner will remain in his current role throughout the search and will retire from full-time work to assume the board chair position once a successor is named.
Since joining Care New England in 2022, Dr. Wagner has guided the system through a unified Epic implementation, strategic planning and rebranding, $100 million in HUD/FHA refinancing for expansion and a return to positive operating performance.
“It has been the privilege of my professional life to serve Care New England and the communities we are honored to care for,” Dr. Wagner said. “Over the past several years, we have strengthened our clinical integration, sharpened our strategic focus, improved our financial position, and positioned the organization for long-term success. I am proud of what our team has accomplished together and confident that Care New England is well-positioned for its next chapter.”
