Dr. Katz said he plans to accept the position, according to the report. He is currently negotiating a compensation package and could start work in January.

As department head, Dr. Katz would oversee a county health system that has seen tough times resulting from patient safety issues, severe overcrowding and staff shortages. County officials are concerned that the federal money funding county health operations could follow newly insured patients to private hospitals, according to the report.

Supervisors voted 4-0 to authorize county CEO William T. Fujioka to negotiate a salary and benefits for Dr. Katz.

Mr. Katz most recently served as chief of San Francisco’s public health department.
