Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Broward Health has appointed Cornelius Powell, MD, MBA, as chief medical officer of Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach, Fla.
Dr. Powell, a board-certified emergency physician, joins the hospital from Sentara Williamsburg (Va.) Regional Medical Center, where he served as vice president and CMO. In this role, he helped build out service lines in trauma, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and obstetrics, while pushing the hospital to top performance on patient safety, readmissions and emergency department efficiency.
Before joining Sentara, Dr. Powell served as regional medical director and vice president of operations for American Physician Partners, supervising more than 200 physicians and advanced practice clinicians across multiple states. He also held leadership roles at Tucson (Ariz.) Medical Center and John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas.
Broward Health operates five hospitals, serving a population of about 1.9 million patients across Broward County, Fla.
