Baptist Health appoints chief medical executive: 5 things to know

Barry Katzen, MD, has been named chief medical executive of the Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, which is part of Coral Gables-based Baptist Health South Florida.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Katzen.

1. As chief medical executive, he is responsible for providing clinical leadership and expertise to cardiovascular physicians throughout the institute, officials said. He will also continue to practice vascular and interventional radiology and care for patients.

2. Dr. Katzen founded Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute in 1987.

3. During his tenure at the institute, he has played a key role in developing interventional radiology as a specialty of medicine, officials said. He has also been a national site principal investigator for various clinical trials in the study of aneurysms, carotid artery disease and peripheral vascular disease. Dr. Katzen has also been involved in the development of numerous devices for less invasive vascular therapy.

4. Dr. Katzen will serve as the first board chairman for the institute's newly formed management group.
 
5. Dr. Katzen takes on his new leadership role as the Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute is undergoing a $100 million expansion on the Baptist Hospital campus in Miami that will feature the development of unique programs for aneurysms and structural heart disease.
