5 Recent Hospital CEO Firings and Suspensions

Here is a list of five recent hospital CEOs who were fired or suspended from their positions.

1. David Cress, former CEO of Minnesota’s North Memorial Medical Center
Mr. Cress was suspended without pay after he was arrested and charged with engaging in prostitution. One of a dozen men arrested during a daylong vice operating in Richfield, Minn. Mr. Cress was replaced by the Minnesota hospital one month after the sting.

2. Earl Fitzpatrick, former CEO of Idaho’s North Canyon Medical Center
Mr. Fitzpatrick was fired along with hospital CFO Rod Larson at the end of September. St. Luke’s Hospital System, the parent company of North Canyon Medical Center, would not disclose the reasons for termination for either executive.

3. Michael Zimmerman, former CEO of Arizona’s White Mountain Regional Medical Center
Mr. Zimmerman was fired on Oct. 5 and replaced by interim CEO Jerry Campeau on Oct. 12. The hospital chose not to disclose the reasons for Mr. Zimmerman’s termination.

4. Gregory Simone, former president and CEO of Georgia’s WellStar Health System
Mr. Simone was fired by the system’s board on Oct. 2. A board chairman said the decision to fire Mr. Simone was a “personnel matter” and provided no more information on the reason for termination. The hospital system also decided not to renew the contract of WellStar’s executive vice president, Bonnie Wilson, but would not say if the terminations were related.

5. Shaun Beggs, former president and CEO of Oklahoma’s McAlester Regional Health Center
Mr. Beggs was ousted the McAlester Regional Health Center hospital board this week. He had served as the hospital’s president and CEO since April 2005 on a two-year contract that automatically renewed at the end of each term. The hospital board voted to terminate his contract 7-1.
