12 Recent Hospital Executive Moves

The following executive moves took place within the past week, beginning with the most recent.

1. Deb Staples was named COO of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. Ms. Staple’s appointment is effective immediately.

2. Leslie Longacre, CEO of South Lake Hospital in Clermont, Fla., will retire at the end of this year. The board of directors has begun succession planning to find Ms. Longacre’s replacement. Her retirement is effective Dec. 31.

3. Tom Timcho will retire May 31 from his role as president and CEO at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pittsburgh.

4. Jennifer Maher was named COO of Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo, Calif.

5. Larry Kaiser, MD, will step down as president of The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston to become CEO of Temple University Health Systems in Philadelphia. Mr. Kaiser’s appointment with the 920-bed TUHS will become effective no later than April 1.

6. Joanie Jeannette was named interim CEO at Lehigh Regional Medical Center in Lehigh Acres, Fla. Ms. Jeanette began her new role with LMC this week.

7. Gary E. Bie was named CFO of Stony Brook (N.Y.) University Hospital. Mr. Bie’s tenure is effective mid-February.

8. James N. Leonard, president CEO of Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, Calif., has resigned after slightly more than six months in the head post. Hospital officials did not provide an explanation for Mr. Leonard’s departure. He was the third CEO at the 436-bed Saint Agnes in six years.

9. Richard Spuhler was appointed CEO of Brigham City (Utah) Community Hospital. Mr. Spuhler has simultaneously served as the hospital’s CFO and COO since 2003.

10. Ron Krawiec, CEO of Wyoming County Community Health System in Warsaw, N.Y., was placed on indefinite administrative leave by the hospital’s board of managers. Reasons for the removal are not available and the board of managers declined to comment, according to the report.

11. Linda Mercier, RN, MSN, was named CEO of Houston Northwest Medical Center. Ms. Mercier has served as COO of the 430-bed Houston Northwest since June 2006.

12. John Colmers, Maryland’s former health secretary, was named vice president for healthcare transformation and strategic planning at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore. Previously, Mr. Colmers was secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene — a $9 billion agency responsible for carrying out programs like Medicaid, public health and regulatory oversight.
