CFO Alex Mendez: Topping the Turnaround Charts at Mount Sinai Medical Center

Alex Mendez was promoted to executive vice president of operations and CFO of Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Fla., in January, having been a member of the system's leadership team for more than 11 years.

Alex Mendez is CFO of Mount Sinai Medical Center.During that time, he was CFO of the hospital, where he rebuilt the finance team and led them through a financial turnaround, earning him recognition from the South Florida Business Journal in 2010 for being part of the "Turnaround Company of the Year." Under his management, the financial team established a project management office to spearhead efficiency-boosting initiatives, refinancing $133 million of debt in 2012 and assisting in the system's expansion efforts.

The improvements did not go unnoticed. Moody's Investors Service upgraded its outlook from stable to positive and affirmed its "Baa2" rating on $215 million in bonds in April, thanks to Mount Sinai increasing its operating cash flow by $50 million since fiscal year 2011 and attaining a 3.9 percent operating margin last fiscal year.

Mr. Mendez, a CPA, earned his bachelor's degree in business, MBA and certificate in health administration from the University of Miami. He began his healthcare financial career in the Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America network starting in 1992.
