Wearables market grows 16.9% year-over-year in Q4

With 33.9 million shipments in the fourth quarter of 2016, the global wearables market saw 16.9 percent year-over-year growth in Q4, according to data from the International Data Corp. Worldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker.

Here are four things to know about IDC’s data on the wearables market.

1. Shipments for the worldwide wearables market grew 25 percent for the entire 2016 year.

2. Fitbit experienced 2.4 percent year-over-year growth in 2016. While its 2015 unit shipments were at 22 million units, its 2016 shipments hit 22.5 million units.

3. Apple’s year-over-year growth in the wearables market decreased by 7.9 percent. Apple’s 2015 unit shipments hit 11.6 million, compared to 10.7 million in 2016.

4. Samsung’s stake in the wearables sector grew 38.6 percent. The company’s unit shipments were 3.2 million in 2015 and 4.4 million in 2016.
