Virginia Providers Among First to Employ Two Health Data Exchange Models

Healthcare providers in Virginia have partnered in a pilot program that integrates two health data exchange models, according to a news release.

The pilot's participants are Dominion Medical Associates, an independent minority-owned physician practice in Richmond, Va., CenVaNet, a healthcare provider network with 900 physicians and 11 non-profit hospitals serving central Virginia, and MedVirginia, a community-based health information exchange.

The pilot leverages two initiatives spearheaded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. The Direct Project is a set of standards, protocols and policies that specifies a simple and secure method for participants to electronically send authenticated, encrypted information to recipients. The NwHIN Exchange enables regional, state and federal health information exchanges to securely share health information.

As a result of the pilot program, care managers from Dominion Medical Associates, CenVaNet and MedVirginia are able to share, store and retrieve encrypted patient data and better coordinate patient care for patients with diabetes and other chronic conditions.
