Use Electronic Tools to Engage Patients, Report Says

The Bipartisan Policy Center has released recommendations (pdf) to build awareness among healthcare providers of the benefits electronic tools offer for patient engagement.

The report, "Improving Quality and Reducing Costs in Health Care: Engaging Consumers Using Electronic Tools" recommends developing and disseminating standards, strategies and best practices to encourage development and use of electronic tools.

"Increasing the use of electronic tools, which are so prevalent in other aspects of American life, can significantly bolster patient engagement efforts across healthcare, resulting in lower costs, better outcomes, and improvements in the experience of care for patients and their families," said Janet Marchibroda, chair of the BPC Health IT Initiative.
