CPOE May Reduce Mortality Rates, Calif. Study Finds

Mortality rates decline after computerized physician order entry is implemented, a recent study by Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital found, according to a report in the Stanford Daily.

The study, published in the May issue of Pediatrics, found that hospital-wide mortality rates declined substantially following the introduction of CPOE, according to the report.

Lucile Packard began using CPOE in 2007, and researchers compared mortality from 2001-2007 to the 2009 rate. After controlling for several variables, researchers concluded there was a 20-percent decline in mortality rates. One decline came after rapid response teams were implemented in 2005 and the second decline followed the introduction of CPOE in 2007, according to the report.
