Chuck Podesta, CIO of Orange, Calif.-based UC Irvine Health, said the healthcare industry should transition towards the cloud, reports Computer World.
Here are three things to know.
- UC Irvine Health, which is teaming up with UC San Diego to use their Epic EHR, will host its data in Epic's private Wisconsin cloud to save money. The health system's go-live is scheduled for November.
- Many healthcare leaders have not made the move to cloud-based EHRs because of privacy concerns, Mr. Podesta told Computer World. Cloud-based EHRs are often not HIPAA-compliant, or have only recently become HIPAA-compliant.
- For Mr. Podesta, maintaining relationships with a select few IT vendors helps drive his organization forward. Cost and talent, as well as thought leadership, are what Mr. Podesta looks for in a vendor partner.
"[The vendors] understand my organization, the challenges we face in our market and in our organization. They understand our strategy, and they're willing to be a part of moving us forward in a lost-cost high-value way. They are also willing to put skin in the game to do that," Mr. Podesta told Computer World.
