Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health is moving its IT service desk and applications support work to an outside technology partner.
The 90-plus hospital Catholic system said the change affects Technology and Information Services roles involving internal tech support but does not touch clinical or patient-facing positions, per a June news release.
Trinity Health said the pace and complexity of healthcare technology are accelerating, making it increasingly difficult for a single organization to keep pace on its own, and that a dedicated technology partner offers specialized expertise and innovation at the scale healthcare now requires.
The transition will roll out in phases over the coming months, with Trinity Health targeting completion by the end of 2026. The health system did not name the incoming technology partner in its statement. Affected employees will get transition support and the chance to apply for new roles within Trinity Health or with the partner organization, the system said.
Trinity Health said patient data security requirements will not change, since any partner must meet its existing privacy and compliance standards. The system also pointed to broader financial pressures, including reimbursement cuts, payment rates that don’t cover the true cost of care, staffing shortages and rising costs of caring for underinsured and uninsured patients, though it said the decision was driven primarily by the specialized expertise needed to support rapidly changing technology.
The move follows Trinity Health’s January decision to cut 10.5% of its revenue cycle management workforce and outsource that work to an external partner, citing similar financial headwinds.
