John Hoyt, executive vice president of HIMSS Analytics, praised Stamford Hospital’s implementation process in a news release: “Stamford has an excellent deployment of their EMR, with full engagement of the medical staff and enterprise… The staff are enthusiastic users who have fully endorsed a nearly paperless care documentation process. Chart reviews on several units revealed a full deployment of paperless capabilities and adoption of rules and alerts to drive best practice.”

Since 2005, HIMSS Analytics’ EMR Adoption Model has tracked electronic medical record adoption in hospitals and health systems throughout the country. The eight-stage model cumulates with stage 7, in which paper records are no longer used. Stage 7 organizations are also able to share patient information electronically and have advanced data analytics capabilities.

Currently, only 165 U.S. hospitals have reached HIMSS’ stage 7 designation.
