Chicago-based Rush University Medical Center plans to launch the state's first mobile stroke treatment unit this upcoming January.
The mobile stroke treatment team plans to respond to 911 calls that report symptoms consistent with a stroke. Along with a regular ambulance, the team — which consists of an emergency medical technician and critical care nurse — will travel to meet the caller. Using telemedicine, the team will then work with stroke neurologists at Rush University Medical Center to evaluate the patient and administer medication.
"Presently patients cannot be treated for their stroke until they get to an emergency room," said James Conners, MD, medical director of the unit. "This new mobile stroke treatment unit will bring immediate stroke diagnosis and treatment to patients at their homes, or wherever they're in need, which will improve their chances of a good recovery."
