With its Open@Epic conference, Epic wanted to reach software developers who had never worked with the company before, according to founder and CEO Judy Faulkner.
Its previous developer events brought customers to work directly with Epic’s own engineers, starting with FHIRWorks, then expanded to include developer program members for learning and networking through the App Orchard conferences, she wrote in an Aug. 10 blog post. Open@Epic — the second of which is scheduled for Oct. 21-22 in Verona, Wis. — broke from that model by welcoming any third-party developer, “regardless of any program membership.”
The first Open@Epic last year drew more than 1,000 attendees, including vendors, consultants, industry representatives and customers. Ms. Faulkner also cited the scale of Epic’s developer ecosystem: More than 2,500 third-party apps are now live with Epic customers, and the company’s public APIs handle more than 875 billion transactions a year. “That is a large community,” she wrote.
Ms. Faulkner also framed the conference as a practical resource. She said programs like Open@Epic and Epic’s Vendor Services help startups connecting to Epic for the first time, as well as established vendors rethinking how their products work with the EHR platform.
The blog post underscores Epic’s push to formalize relationships with the broader vendor community as health systems increasingly rely on outside applications layered onto the EHR.
Epic’s biggest conference — its annual Users Group Meeting, with roughly 7,000 attendees — is set for next week, Aug. 17-20 at the EHR giant’s Verona, Wis., headquarters.
