Hospitals lose about $7,908 every minute their data center experiences downtime, according to a report from the Ponemon Institute and Emerson Network Power.

This per-minute cost has increased 41 percent since 2010, when a minute of outage cost a hospital an average of $5,617. On average, data centers lose $690,204 per outage, up from $184,702 in 2010.

The prevalence of data center outages remains high — a survey of 584 data center professionals found 91 percent of data centers have experienced an unplanned outage in the past 24 months.  Survey respondents also indicated they were generally unprepared for data center outages. Just 38 percent of respondents reported having enough resources to bring the data center back up following unplanned outages, and only 36 percent said they are using best practices in data center design and redundancy elimination.

To reduce the risk of incurring the high cost of a data center outage, respondents indicated the best step their organization could take would be to invest in new or improved equipment less prone to failure.
