OpenNotes is a movement encouraging providers to make medical notes available online to their patients. What started as a study published in 2012 including 105 primary care physicians and 20,000 patients rapidly expanded across the country.

Currently, the Department of Veterans Affairs and 50 health systems in 35 states share notes via patient portals. According to OpenNotes, close to one-third of the Americans accessing notes online are veterans.

“We’re seeing the culture shift toward transparency in the patient and provider relationship really take hold, and we’re beginning to understand the benefits that openness brings to everyone in the healthcare delivery system,” Cait DesRoches, OpenNotes executive director, said in a statement.
