Apple has unveiled Apple Watch Series 12, introducing a new Health Sensing System the company says delivers the most accurate heart rate sensing of any wearable device. The tech giant built the feature around new optical and electrical heart sensors paired with its S11 chip.

The watch now measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day and captures heart rate variability up to 24 times more often than before, feeding a new “readiness” score, per a Sept. 9 news release. The 0-10 score combines recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep data into a daily recommendation — Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It.

Apple also plans a redesigned Health app for iPhone later this year, including a Longevity tab with a Health Age feature that compares a user’s health metrics to their chronological age. Users will be able to book lab tests covering more than 50 biomarkers for $119 through the app at roughly 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations nationwide.

The device builds on Apple’s expanding health-monitoring lineup, which already includes an FDA-cleared ECG app, sleep apnea notifications and hypertension alerts introduced on Apple Watch Series 11.
