ONC to Establish "Communities of Practice" for Clinical Decision Support Technology

Several "communities of practice" will be assisting 17 "beacon communities" established by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT to incorporate clinical decision support technologies, care transitions programs and pharmacy solutions and tools into their respective healthcare improvement projects, according to a Healthcare IT News report.

The "communities of practice," which aim to determine specific treatments that will best improve patient outcomes, will share best practices and lessons they have learned. The ONC will also develop a performance measurement and reporting capability that will enable beacon communities to track results and implement process improvements.

In one beacon community in Detroit, communications with Medicaid patients will be tested to help patients keep better track of physician appointments, organize medications and receive personal health reminders. Other beacon communities will utilize and examine telehealth services as a way of monitoring patient health remotely.
