Nearly half of tech workers worried about job security: 4 things to know

About 42 percent of tech workers at organizations across the globe are concerned about job security due to the COVID-19 pandemic's economic effects, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Four things to know:

1. In a survey of 2,300 tech professionals conducted in May by Hired, an online tech-recruiting firm, about 42 percent said they were at risk of being laid off in the next six months.

2. Thirty-nine percent of the Hired survey respondents also said they are afraid to leave their current job for a new position.

3. Tech giants including Uber and Airbnb recently issued layoffs; in May, Uber said it planned to cut 6,700 positions due to declining sales while Airbnb said it will cut 25 percent of its workforce, according to the report.

4. Despite layoffs and tech workers' fears, Martha Heller, CEO of tech-recruiting firm Heller Search Associates, told The WSJ that workers should feel "some measure" of job security as many organizations are now supporting digital capabilities for remote work and other business tools.

"Covid has shown CEOs, across all industries, that data and digital technologies are their most strategic investment areas," Ms. Heller said. "IT hiring should stay strong throughout the pandemic, compared to other functional roles," she said.
