Mass General, Brigham and Women's to deploy Philips solutions for digital pathology

Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, both affiliates of Boston-based Partners HealthCare, will implement the Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution to drive digital pathology workflows, Amsterdam-based Royal Philips confirmed March 19.

Digital pathology is an approach to diagnosis that incorporates digital images of tissue, rather than conducting a visual examination of tissue slides through a microscope. The Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution supports this workflow through solutions that scan slides, manage images and share data across labs.

As part of a collaboration with Philips, Mass General and Brigham and Women's will establish digital pathology centers that will focus on projects to improve user interface design, analytics and education. The goal of these digital pathology centers will be to develop best practices for the field.

"There is tremendous opportunity not only to improve lab efficiency through increased access to information and images that eliminates the chance of materials being lost, broken or misfiled, but also to dramatically enhance patient care through the deployment of advanced algorithms," said Jeff Golden, MD, chair of the pathology department at Brigham and Women's.
