The departments of Defense and Veteran Affairs should integrate their electronic health record systems to provide coordinated care for U.S. troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the summary of a report by the Institute of Medicine.
Forty-nine percent of returning veterans have experienced post-traumatic stress and 44 percent have experienced readjustment difficulties. While the DOD and VA implement appropriate policies, many times their response is dwarfed by the magnitude of the problems, according to the report.
Enhanced interoperability between DOD and VA EHRs will better ease the transition for returning troops, as the departments will be able to track service members' care delivery.
