Internal breach: Mayo Clinic employee inappropriately accessed patient records

An internal investigation has been launched following discovery of a Mayo Clinic Health System employee’s inappropriate access of patient records in Red Wing, Minn., according to a Post Bulletin report.

The breach, discovered within the past few months, occurred over an extended period of time, according to the report. No evidence of further disclosure of health information or financial information access has been uncovered yet.

Mayo is notifying affect patients. The employee is no longer with the clinic.  

“Mayo Clinic will continue the proactive monitoring of patient records to prevent further incidents from occurring. Mayo Clinic takes this matter very seriously and is committed to maintaining the highest levels of integrity and trust for those it serves,” according to a statement from the health system.
