OpenAI is continuing its push into healthcare by investing in Merge Labs, a brain-computer interface startup co-founded by its CEO, Sam Altman.

Merge Labs is a new competitor to Elon Musk’s Neuralink, which has an implant in clinical trials to restore movement in paralyzed patients. Mr. Musk co-founded OpenAI before departing in 2018 over disagreements with the company’s direction.

“Brain computer interfaces are an important new frontier. They open new ways to communicate, learn, and interact with technology,” OpenAI wrote in a Jan. 15 blog post. “BCIs will create a natural, human-centered way for anyone to seamlessly interact with AI. This is why OpenAI is participating in Merge Labs’ seed round.”

Merge Labs said it plans to take a less invasive approach to the devices. “To make this happen, we’re developing entirely new technologies that connect with neurons using molecules instead of electrodes, transmit and receive information using deep-reaching modalities like ultrasound, and avoid implants into brain tissue,” the company stated Jan. 15.

The $252 funding round reportedly puts Merge Labs’ valuation at $850 million. OpenAI has made other moves in healthcare recently, launching ChatGPT for Health and a platform for hospitals and health systems.
