Google CEO: Comprehensive AI regulations could restrict innovation

Existing regulations may be sufficient to govern artificial intelligence, eliminating the need for the sweeping government regulations many politicians and industry experts have called for, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Mr. Pichai suggested that governments and businesses could work together to translate existing rules into “smart regulation” that not only protects user privacy, but also enables continued innovation. In cases that do require new rules, those should be highly specific, he said, restricting only those algorithms and technologies that absolutely require restrictions, rather than limiting all AI.

“It is such a broad, cross-cutting technology, so it’s important to look at [regulation] more in certain vertical situations,” he said. “There are areas where we need to do the research before we know what are the right kinds of approaches we need to take…Rather than rushing into it in a way that prevents innovation and research, you actually need to solve some of the difficult problems.”
