Cleveland Clinic and IBM’s Discovery Accelerator has supported more than 50 biomedical research projects in its first five years, the organizations said June 15 at the third annual Cleveland Discovery and Innovation Forum.
The 10-year partnership, launched in 2021, applies high-performance computing, AI and quantum computing to speed biomedical discovery. Alongside the 50-plus projects, it has produced multiple peer-reviewed publications and built an education curriculum aimed at developing a quantum-ready workforce. The daylong forum at Cleveland Clinic convened over 30 speakers from academia, industry, foundations, venture capital and government to examine how AI and quantum computing are reshaping research, per a June 15 news release. A project showcase featured recent work simulating a protein of more than 12,000 atoms — the largest protein structure known to be modeled on a quantum computer.
Cleveland Clinic also detailed the 2026 Global Quantum + AI Challenge, a competition with the Quantum Insider that will award $200,000 across five enterprise challenges, and named the latest cohort of its Quantum Catalyzer Program, which can receive up to $250,000 from the K5 Tokyo Black Fund with a Cleveland Clinic in-kind match.
