Three AI-powered tools Google is launching:

  1. Google and Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine are teaming up to develop an artificial intelligence tool to support clinician work by triaging mammography patients. The AI tool will examine mammograms and warn clinicians if it spots anything potentially alarming. The tool is expected to speed up the time it takes for patients to get their mammogram results, according to a May 18 Google press conference.
  2. Just as users can snap photos on an app to classify their house plants, Google is launching an AI tool that can classify skin conditions. Google researchers began developing the tool because there were 10 billion searches each year where users were attempting to identify their skin conditions. What they found was that even though users were spending hours researching, only 13 percent of users identified the skin condition correctly. The tool is expected to help patients who may have malignant moles understand the risk and seek medical attention, according to a different May 18 press conference hosted by Google.
  3. Just as AI can scan mammograms to detect warning signs of breast cancer, AI can analyze chest X-rays to assist in diagnosing tuberculosis. It’s tough to diagnose TB because of how similar symptoms are to other respiratory diseases. Researchers at Google are developing a tool to identify patients who may have TB and recommend follow-up testing, according to a May 20 news release.
