In 2020, AI will zero in on behavioral health, social determinants, drug resistance & more

Artificial intelligence is currently used on a more insular, internal level within healthcare organizations, but in the months and years to come will expand to address population-level issues such as disease outbreaks and social determinants of health on a global scale.

During a panel titled "AI and Patient Engagement — New Thoughts on 2020" at the Becker's Hospital Review Health IT + Revenue Cycle conference in Chicago in October, four healthcare executives discussed how their organizations are already using AI to improve patient engagement, and the trends they believe will drive further progress in the next year.

The panelists included Niamh O'Hara, PhD, CEO of Biotia; Jeanne Teshler, president and CEO of Wellsmith; Medell Briggs, MD, director of quality for emergency medicine at UCLA Health and founder and CEO of Contour Health Solutions; and Uli Chettipally, MD, founder and president of InnovatorMD.

They shared several key ways and areas in which AI can be used to improve engagement:

  • Patient diagnostics
  • Precision medicine
  • Predicting chronic conditions
  • Changing behaviors
  • Patient education
  • Adherence tracking

In 2020, the panelists predicted, a greater focus will be placed on the use of AI in mobile technologies and predictive analytics, all for the purposes of addressing behavioral health, disease outbreaks, drug resistance, value-based care and social determinants of health.
