The tool, developed by Healthfinch and called Charlie, integrates with EHRs to link refill requests with relevant patient data and process these requests to determine whether it is in protocol, out of protocol, a duplicate or erroneous.
With the help of Charlie, roughly 60 percent of the 10,000 monthly refill requests that come to Valley Medical Group are now managed by a clerical person, without provider review. Since deploying the tool 18 months ago, Charlie has helped reduce the clerical staff’s workload of by 50 percent.
Martha Mastroberti, manager of healthcare informatics at Valley Medical Group, partially attributes the reduction in workload to insights Charlie provides staff. For example, Charlie noted many refill requests were duplicates.
“Twenty percent of our monthly requests were duplicate requests,” Ms. Mastroberti told athenaInsight. “I had no idea how much time we spent either investigating those requests or actually filling them by accident.”
