Using data from Healthgrades, researchers determined the actual and predicted mortality rates across five service lines for 4,583 U.S. hospitals. They then compared differences between actual and predicted rates with the hospitals’ EMR capabilities, as defined by their place on the HIMSS EMR Adoption Model.
Controlling for patient volume, teaching status and location, results showed high levels of EMR adoption to be associated with a larger difference between predicted and actual patient mortality, suggesting the increased amount of data captured through advanced EMR use is clinically beneficial.
