Highmark now covers teledermatology

Highmark has announced it will be the first insurer in the country to offer teledermatology as a covered benefit, starting Jan. 1, 2015.

As of the first of the year, telemedicine provide through the web-based platform DermatologistOnCall will be covered for individuals on Highmark plans. The service, for which an average diagnosis/prescription turnaround time is less than 12 hours, will be available 24-7.

Highmark already covers telemedicine primary care visits through Teladoc and has done so since 2012, according to a Highmark release.
