Global spending on medical device security to triple by 2021: 5 things to know

Spending on healthcare cybersecurity is expected to increase through 2021, according to an ABI Research report.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Global spending on healthcare cybersecurity is expected to reach $5.5 billion; however, only $390 million is expected to go toward securing medical devices.

2. As awareness about cybersecurity issues rises, global spending on securing medical devices is expected to triple by 2021.

3. These increased cybersecurity expenditures encompass additional precautions, like manufacturers embedding security in hardware and healthcare providers focusing on data protection.

4. At present, the United States is leading the effort for increased medical device security.

5. Companies leading the effort for medical device security include Battelle, Coalfire and Extreme Networks.
