Mr. Musk believes Puerto Rico’s grid could be repaired with batteries and solar power, which Tesla has used in similar grid projects that served much smaller populations.
“The Tesla team has [built solar grids] for many smaller islands around the world, but there is no scalability limit, so it can be done for Puerto Rico too,” Mr. Musk tweeted on Thursday. “Such a decision would be in the hands of the [Puerto Rico government], [public utilities commission], any commercial stakeholders and, most importantly, the people of [Puerto Rico].”
Tesla has sent hundreds of its Powerwall batteries — which use solar energy — to the island for immediate relief.
