RxRevu recently commissioned a survey of providers to understand their current use of prescription decision support tools, what information they want embedded in the EHR, and how they would benefit from having price transparency solutions turned on.
Survey Results
While IT resources are often in high demand, the benefits of RTPB greatly outweigh the costs. Survey respondents overwhelmingly wanted medication pricing information at the point-of-care (88%), with the majority also wanting formulary and coverage restriction information displayed (86%).
“Having this information would make conversations more data-driven” said one provider. “It certainly would limit the number of follow-ups where a person abandons a prescription or treatment because of cost.” Another noted, “We never know for sure what medication will be covered until we prescribe it and submit it to insurance.”
But it isn’t enough to simply have access to pricing information. Providers need trustworthy data to make the most informed decisions for their patients. The research shows that only 11% of providers surveyed find their EHR’s current prescription decision-making tools to be helpful and 77% must frequently change, manage, or resend a prescription order once it has been sent to the pharmacy. The lack of trustworthy data at the point-of-care, or flags that could alert providers of coverage restrictions, causes frustration, limits productivity, and prevents informed prescribing.
“I’ve never really thought about where this information comes from or whether it’s accurate,” one physician pointed out. “I definitely need data in the EHR to be more up-to-date,” emphasized another.
Bringing Better Price Transparency to the Point-of-Care
It is crucial that EHR data be patient-specific and up-to-date. But not all RTPB solutions are created equal. Some display accurate, real-time medication costs in the EHR, while others show more vague, obsolete information. IT teams must understand which type of data they are bringing to their EHR to reduce unnecessary rework.
RxRevu works closely with health systems, pharmacy benefit managers (PBM), and EHR vendors to deploy the most accurate RTPB solution in the market. With direct connections to PBM data sources, pricing information displayed at the point-of-care is not only patient-specific, but it takes into consideration copay, deductible, and coverage status, and is the actual price a patient will pay at the pharmacy. RxRevu also fills coverage gaps left by other RTPB vendors to reduce downstream work and create a better prescribing experience.
One might think turning on Real-Time Prescription Benefit would be a heavy lift for IT teams. However, RxRevu has made it simple for health systems to meet the needs of their providers and patients by integrating RTPB directly into the EHR. In most cases, the functionality can be turned on through simple configuration steps. And since coverage information is embedded directly into the prescribing workflow, there is no additional software and little-to-no training needed. The solution RxRevu offers is purpose-built to deliver information to EHRs as seamlessly as possible.
While some providers lack the tools necessary to discuss medication options at the point-of-care, others are simply looking for better information to improve workflows and patient conversations.
