The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has launched Epic EHRs across all 13 state-operated psychiatric hospitals and residential treatment facilities.

The system supports care for adults and children with mental illness, developmental disabilities, substance use disorders and neurological conditions, according to an Aug. 25 news release from the health department.

The EHR is designed to boost care coordination, streamline staff workflows, enhance patient data security and improve regulatory compliance.

The rollout marks the department’s first enterprise-wide EHR, replacing a mix of paper records and legacy systems that varied across sites. The health department said the implementation lays the foundation for better data-sharing with community providers and public health agencies.
