Epic Systems is preparing to roll out its own AI tool that transcribes clinical notes during patient visits, multiple sources familiar with the company’s plans told Politico.
The tool is expected to be announced in August, according to the Aug. 7 report, and would mark Epic’s formal entry into a market led by companies such as Abridge and Nuance, which is owned by Microsoft.
Although Epic has previously integrated third-party scribes from Microsoft and Abridge into its platform, the company is now joining a group of EHR vendors developing their own in-house versions. Athenahealth, Oracle Health and Elation Health have already introduced similar tools.
Ambient scribes aim to reduce the documentation burden on clinicians by automatically generating notes from conversations during medical appointments. The technology has seen growing interest across the healthcare industry. More than 70% of healthcare practice leaders say they are using some form of AI for patient visits, according to an August survey by the Medical Group Management Association.
