As CIOs’ responsibilities expand, many are aiming to become chief executives, according to Deloitte.
Here are six key takeaways from the Nov. 13 report, which surveyed 622 U.S.-based technology leaders from March 7 to April 1.
1. 80% of CIOs say their roles have grown significantly to meet business objectives.
2. 65% of CIOs now report directly to the CEO, up from 41% a decade ago.
3. 67% of CIOs aspire to be CEOs.
4. Peers who think CIOs are well-suited to be chief executives cite their proven leadership and management skills (39%), ability to drive innovation and growth (37%), and track record of shaping high-performing teams (37%).
5. By comparison, 55% of chief information security officers, 42% of chief data and analytics officers, and 41% of chief technology officers aim to move into the CEO role.
6. At least five former health system technology leaders have been named chief executives in recent years.
