HHS’ ONC has selected nine teams as phase 1 winners of its EHIgnite Challenge, a federal competition to turn dense electronic health information exports into usable tools for patients and clinicians.
The challenge drew nearly 100 submissions targeting the problem of single-patient EHI exports that often run hundreds of pages and are difficult to act on. A multidisciplinary expert panel, along with internal ONC review, selected the nine winners based on summarization quality, clear use cases and intuitive wireframes.
Each winner receives $10,000 and advances to phase 2. The roster includes Avista Development, CareLead, HealthLink360, HubChart, Onni Health, MediVu, Benten Technologies, Precision Health Ventures and Washington Health Summary, according to a July 21 ONC blog post. Their approaches range from AI-driven care-gap detection to plain-language summaries for hospital-to-skilled nursing facility transitions and patient-controlled records that pull from EHRs, insurers and state registries.
Phase 2 carries a $400,000 prize pool, including a $250,000 grand prize, and concludes in March 2027. ONC will host a Phase 1 Winners Showcase on Aug. 6.
The challenge builds on a requirement that health IT developers export electronic health information dating to December 2023, addressing ONC’s view that “computable” data exports haven’t always translated into data patients and clinicians can actually use.
