DOD names Essye Miller acting CIO: 4 things to know

The U.S. Department of Defense appointed Essye Miller its acting CIO, effective Dec. 8, FCW reports.

Here are four things to know about the executive move.

1. Ms. Miller currently serves as deputy CIO for cybersecurity and senior information security officer. She will retain these duties under the acting CIO appointment.

2. As acting CIO, Ms. Miller will oversee the DOD's cybersecurity initiatives and will serve as the primary advisor for IT to Secretary of Defense James Mattis.

3. Ms. Miller's appointment follows former acting DOD CIO John Zangardi, PhD, transitioning to CIO of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which the White House announced Oct. 26.

4. Dr. Zangardi's move joined a number of federal technology officials that had resigned or been reassigned to other roles in recent months, in what Federal News Radio called a possible "IT exec purge" in August.
