The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded South Carolina-based Clemson University a contract of up to $1.2 million to research mobile intervention for diabetes self-management.
For the project, the university's public health sciences department is collaborating with the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command's Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center to develop technology that links a user's smartphone with devices like glucometers and fitness trackers.
The mHealth intervention will send participants customized health messages, including guidance related to nutrition, exercise and medication maintenance. The goal is to provide users with appropriate information as needed, so that that patients are not overwhelmed with information.
The researchers have already tested the technology at Mike O'Callaghan Federal Medical Center at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas and Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash.
