DirectTrust, a healthcare industry alliance, advocates for the secure, interoperable exchange of personal health information between provider organizations and patients using the Direct exchange network. HL7, a nonprofit organization, develops standards for electronic health information, including the FHIR standards framework for web application programming interfaces and healthcare data exchange.
The two organizations suggest using Direct’s exchange framework to support FHIR’s API and using FHIR resources within Direct’s messages.
“We should take every opportunity to combine the strengths of different interoperability standards, so that they enrich and support each other,” said DirectTrust President and CEO David C. Kibbe, MD. “No single standard, either for transport, or for content, or for trust in identity, can do everything that is needed by providers and patients wanting to securely share and exchange health information.”
