The Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network has executed three grant agreements worth more than $50 million with the state to fund rural hospital technology, disease prevention and workforce initiatives.
ICAHN signed the agreements with the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services on July 31, effective August 1 through June 30, 2027, per an Aug. 12 news release. The funding comes through Illinois’ share of the federal Rural Health Transformation Program, a five-year, $50 billion CMS initiative; the state received about $193 million for year one, and ICAHN is the largest sub-awardee of that funding.
Of the total, $31,008,264 is earmarked for technology transformation. ICAHN will first coordinate a digital readiness assessment across all 78 eligible hospitals before awarding project funding. Potential investments include cybersecurity, telehealth, EHR optimization, AI and automation, and data analytics. ICAHN also plans a technology and cybersecurity summit and will explore group purchasing options to cut vendor costs for participating hospitals.
The remaining funds include $14 million for chronic disease prevention programs and $5 million for workforce recruitment and retention.
ICAHN represents 60 small and rural Illinois hospitals serving about 1.4 million residents.
