Digital mental health apps Ginger, Headspace finalize $3B merger: 6 details 

Mental health and meditation app Headspace closed its merger with on-demand digital mental health service Ginger, the companies announced Oct. 14.

Six details: 

1. Under the deal, which Headspace and Ginger announced in August, the companies have formed Headspace Health to serve consumers, employers and health plans. 

2. In August, TechCrunch reported that the new organization would have a combined value of $3 billion and more than 800 employees. 

3. Headspace Health is combining Ginger and Headspace for Work into a single offering for employers for mental health and well-being care. 

4. Both Headspace and Ginger were founded in 2010. Headspace offers mindfulness training and previously has partnered with healthcare providers, including Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Spectrum Health and Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente, on offerings for employees and patients. 

5. Ginger offers members mental healthcare services including behavioral health coaching, therapy and psychiatry via smartphone. Its services are reimbursed as a virtual in-network benefit through fully insured, self-insured and government-funded programs such as the Cigna and Medicaid program AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia. 

6. Through both Ginger and Headspace for Work, employees have access to on-demand 24/7 care through behavioral health coaching, therapy and psychiatry.
