Mr. Hunt hypothesized the number of real people whose contact information was compromised is “somewhat less” than 711 million because of fake, malformed and repeated email addresses included in the dataset.
Additionally, the 1.2 million leaked passwords were seemingly aggregated from previous data breaches, including a May 2016 incident in which cyberattackers stole 164 million passwords from LinkedIn, according to The Guardian.
